I started by importing free GIS shapefiles containing the subway lines and stations from MassGIS, the official GIS data agency in Massachusetts, into ExpertGPS Pro. In this tutorial, I’ll be creating a system map for Boston’s MBTA system, the oldest subway in the world. By placing your custom map symbols online, anyone who uses ExpertGPS, EasyGPS, or Google Earth can view your maps with the custom markers you created. ExpertGPS allows you to create your own custom map symbols, which you can use on your own maps. Note: to see all the MapSource icons available, create a waypoint in MapSource, then in the Waypoint Properties box click on the dropdown next to “Symbol”.ExpertGPS comes with several hundred waypoint symbols you can use on your maps, but sometimes you need to create a map with your own custom symbology.

In parentheses below the label is the MapSource Symbol category which contains this icon. This is how they’re displayed on my Garmin 60Cx, but they may well be different on other Garmin models. For future reference, I’ve put together the following tables of Garmin waypoint icons by category. I pointed him to this Garmin page, which has a partial legend for Garmin MapSource icons, but it turns out that MapSource icons don’t always resemble the corresponding icons on a Garmin GPS unit.There’s no legend for Garmin GPS unit waypoint icons anywhere else that I could find, either on the Web or in Garmin’s own documentation.
